Boston Medical Center
One of the most challenging gastrointestinal disorders is Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). Over one million Americans have IBD. Approx-imately half of this group has Crohn’s Disease and the other half has Ulcerative Colitis. Boston Medical Center offers a variety of innovative medical, surgical and minimally invasive treatments for these disabling diseases. Crohn’s Disease is a serious inflammatory ailment that can involve any part of the digestive tract, though most frequently it involves the small intestine and/or large intestine (colon). Ulcerative Colitis affects the colon. Medications can decrease symptoms and improve the quality of life of those affected with these disorders. When these medications do not work adequately, minimally invasive or traditional open surgical techniques are required. Surgical techniques have advanced dramatically over the last two decades, greatly improving the patient’s outcome and quality of life. Boston Medical Center specialists include scientists examining the causes of IBD. Novel agents for the treatment of IBD are available to patients who do not respond to the standard treatments. Dr. James M. Becker, Department of Surgery, and Dr. Francis A. Farraye, Section of Gastroenterology, are the co-directors of the IBD Core of the Center for Digestive Disorders, and both are recent recipients of the New England Chapter of the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation’s Humanitarian of the Year Award for their work with patients living with IBD.
